The work of Esmee Seebregts ('s-Hertogenbosch, 1991) is an ode to colour. Her work focuses entirely on the power, meaning and experience it creates. Conducting artistic research into the cultural meaning of Colour is a quest to answer her questions. She tries to penetrate the essence of Colour and understand its sensory, cultural and transcendental effects.
In the series ' Colour doesn't Hurt', Seebregts explores themes such as (in)nocence and shame, as well as the associations colours evoke. As humans, we unconsciously organize colours into a moral spectrum, in which cultural background plays a clear role.
The careful preparation of her own egg-tempera paint, casein, and a surface are important parts of Seebregt's work. Her colours have an enormous radiant power, which is created by the colouring power of the pigments and the clarity of the binder. The effect is an exuberant colour experience that challenges the viewer to tolerate, admire or despise the work.
